If you were logged in, you could vote for this story!

You're quite completely lacking in clue. You should just shut up.

There's so many people out there -- especially noticeable in the wake of the recent election -- who actually believe they are significantly smarter than most other people. We all objectively know that about half the people in the world are below average, and that this includes many of the people on this web site, but we don't wish to admit that we might be in that group. We prefer to deceive ourselves. It feels better.

It's especially odd to see whole groups of people boosted up as smarter or shut down as dumber. The South is dumber than the Northeast or West? The urban smarter than the rural? This doesn't even pass the smell test, and people who actually believed that online hoax about how "red" states have lower IQs only help prove that it isn't true. Oh, you didn't realize it was a hoax? Maybe you should stop bragging about how much smarter you are, then? Hmmm?

But the worse problem is one that becomes less obvious when we're battling over whether Seattle is smarter than Nashville: the fact that all of us are, in the grand scheme of things, pretty fucking clueless. No one has any real idea of what Iraq is going to be like in 10 years, how Social Security really can be saved, or what the Supreme Court would rule in regard to the portability of marriages under the Defense of Marriage Act.

We don't know if a sales tax would end up being more fair and more efficient than an income tax. We don't know if we will save more lives by spending government money on medical research instead of lowering taxes to let the free market work. We don't know if the Middle East has a better chance for peace with Arafat gone.

And that's just for starters. Really, it's amazing our society even exists, with the overwhelming lack of clue in our species. The majority of the time we're just making uneducated guesses which merely happen to be correct, or for some bizarre reason don't result in the death of ourselves and the many people around us.

I wrote a song about how stupid all of you are. Here's the MP3 and the lyrics. Share the love.

Pudge, you might actually be respectable if you weren't such a flamingly retarded hypocrite. If you actually believed in any of this drivel, you wouldn't be spouting off about it.

The addition of the song was a nice effort, though... as if to say "And just to prove it, look at what a cluelessly bad songwriter I am!"

    But still...

First of all, "average" and "normal" are rarely the same thing. Average includes all the remarkably intelligent people (infinitesimal in number) as well as all the impossibly stupid people (who are legion). As you can see, "average" is pretty well below normal.

Second of all, if you can't figure out that "average" and "normal" aren't the same, doesn't that put you somewhere below "average"?

It DOES NOT MATTER what average is. We are all stupid, every damned last one of us, including the "remarkably intelligent" ones. Cure cancer and bring peace to the Middle East, then get back to me about how smart us humans are.

I can throw darts at a dartboard too. How is finding a cure to cancer and establishing peace in the middle east the benchmark by which "human intelligence" is measured?

and Gnashing of Teeth and Tearing of Hair and Rending of Garments Aside, I am very comfortable asserting that I am:
    (a) smarter
    (b) better read (not the same thing!)
    (c) better educated (again, not to be subsumed to (a) or (b))
    and
    (d) better spoken than you are.

Australia has recently had a federal election and we, the people of the "Clever Country" voted the same idiotic sock-puppet back into power for a record fourth term in office. Yes, that's how clever we are down here: there is no limit to the amount of time a Prime Minister can "rule" this island.

I voted for the other guy - the one in the dirty diaper covered in his own drool, so how clever am I? This guy makes W. look like Einstein. Thank god he didn't win.

If y'all think the US is demented, come to Austraya, mate. The Lucky Cuntry.
Tell you what: we're all lucky to be alive. We're lucky to be here at all, we're so fucking stupid.

You're smarter than someone who licks Pledge off of furniture. But so what? Can you give us world peace? Solve world hunger and disease? No?

Let me put it this way: you're a lot closer to the person who licks Pledge than you are to someone whose intelligence can really help solve our problems. Or more mathematically, the margin of difference between you and the Pledge-licker is statistically insignificant. Or, you're still dung.

I started doing this quite often. Talking to someone, and we're talking about... whatever, I'll say something like "Mathematics dictates that 50% of human population is below average"... I have never had anyone say "That's true"... I have had, however a few rather entertaining responses. below are my two favorites.

"You would think that would be a higher number"
"That's an awful high number of people below average, I think that number is too high"

Not that this has anything to do with their stupidity, humans tend to follow the herd as it were, and get them in a room with 3 people in it, and they will all react the same way to a given stimulus, 90% of the time.

Anyway, now I'm late, see ya

If one person scores a 100% on a test, and 4 others score 0%, the average is a 20%. So 4 people are below average, and one is above, so 80% are below average.

Yes, it's possible that 50% can be below average, and 50% above, but what are the odds that this mathematical condition exists in humanity?

You know, not to be nitpicky or anything...

however generally when you're talking about a mathematically significant data set, you will get a bell curve... Obviously, if you think about every person you know, there isn't one person who is head and shoulders above the rest, and 4 people that are nearly brain dead.

to aggregates of individuals is 'apple and apples'. 'Obviously' is a tag on.... dude snagged your facile 50% thing right at it's core fallacy... that people are somehow embodiments of the bell curves that end up being provisional schema of their behaviors or characteristics, rather than a 'sort of' 'other way around'. 'Obviously' you were coming on strong with your funny parlor trick 50% Psyche-Out and someone sank Your Pretty Pony in front of The Other 3, woops. THEN you have to tag on a tush-tush-tush child! type 'obviously' comment, with 'obviously' itself embedded into your presentation there, leading all the witnesses, raking over your ugly snow angel, driving your strangely neccessary schema into some dogmatic position to be accepted as obvious. Instead, something else seems to be going on.

What wasn't obvious at first was the dunderheadedness of your parlor trick. Someone undid it and revealed the obviousness of it's uselessness as 'salience'. Now step off, Gallup.

Not average. That should clear up a little of the confusion.

If you are refering to average, then you are mistaken about your 50% figure.

By definition, 50% of people are above the median, and 50% are below it.

The elegance of those blogging engines and CMS platforms may be the lack of limitations and ease of manipulation that permits builders to put into action prosperous subject material and 'skin' the site in this kind of a way that with really little effort a single would in no way observe what it truly is generating the website tick all without having limiting content and effectiveness.
