general Terminated with extreme prejudice ... FOR SMOKING

Ah yes, At Will Employment...hard at work.

If you look up the word asinine on the internet, it's very likely that you will come across a Michigan based business by the name of Weyco, a company that provides healthcare related services. The founder, one Mr. Howard Weyers, has implemented a policy rivaled in its discrimination of indviduals only by Eugenics whereby all employees who refuse to quit smoking (even at home off the clock) are fired. There have already been several terminations for those employees who refused a mandatory breath-test that can detect the presence of latent cigarette smoke. Mr. Weyers now wants to target those who are overweight. This is a dangerous precedent indeed, especially for myself and my fellow geeks out there. By gods, who out there knows a geek who isn't fat, addicted to nicotine, or both?

In addition, I would also like to point out as an addendum to this story that most scientists agree stress is a major factor in why we gain weight and engage in unhealthy activities. Perhaps we should look at suing employers for making our lives difficult before they have a chance to fire us for the side effects.

from Why WEYCO is serious about smoking (PDF):

Despite facts like these, we also get the question: "What will companies ban next -- unhealthy eating, drinking, and sexual behavior?"

    The answer is no.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that was not a 'yes or no' question. In fact, it appears to be no form of question at all -- it starts off as a general query, then answers itself, yet ends in a perplexingly inappropriate question mark.

I think I'll try this technique out on others:

Me: "Why won't you have sex with me -- fatness, laziness, and lack of gainful employment?"

Girl at bar: "The answer is yes."

I would like to express my appreciation to you just for bailing me out of this setting. Just after researching through the internet and seeing basics which were not pleasant, I thought my entire life was done. Living minus the solutions to the problems you've fixed through your entire short post is a serious case, as well as ones that might have in a wrong way damaged my entire career if I hadn't come across your web page. The training and kindness in maneuvering every item was very helpful. I am not sure what I would have done if I hadn't encountered such a point like this. I can at this point relish my future. Thanks so much for your high quality and result oriented help. I won't hesitate to suggest your site to any person who requires guide on this subject. where to guest blog

of people citing smoking as a reason for calling child services, or in support of how to arrange custody. People turn away because the smokers dig their hole by saying smoking isn't bad for their baby, its their choice, what will they ban next.
These are bad reasons because any fucktard on the planet can answer them without the slightest attempt to intelligently analyze the statement. Then the market is flooded with idiocy, and people lean to the safe side just in case. Then, there's no smoking in bars.

So fuck them before the process starts. You're right, sue the fucking pants off of them.

sorry dood. this reads to me like an argument urgently defending toxic bread and poisonous circuses. if you want to smoke and work and smoke and play and smoke and smoke and smoke some more, all at the same time, surrounded by smoke and Smoker's Freedoms, steeping until you are prematurely skinless in a polluted haze of collective smoker-friendly denial, to boot: move to Kentucky, is my advice. Viva Weyco!

The problem is not the smoking, its the inconsistency. It is illegal for a business do discriminate on other unhealthy habits, such as obesity, alcohol addiction, etc. Smoking addiction is not considered a "disease" so it is not protected. This is inconsistent and unfair.

I think the core of the problem is that companies get blanket healthcare plans for all their employees, picking up the tab for the costs equally. This is unfair to their healthier employees. For some reason, insurance companies offer much better rates for companies providing coverage pacakges to all their employees - I suspect its because they make the money back off of employees who don't use the service, whereas private, individual customers know they need coverage. So, to deal with both these problems, simply figure in the insurance costs into the contract. Simply adjust the contract such that employees' salaries are reduced or added equal to the adjustment from the mean health-insurance cost for the company. If an employee has an unhealthy habit, let them pay for it.

All of this stems from the US problem of handing off health insurance to the private companies. Here in Canada, oru system may be sluggish, but at least its fair. Plus, the Canadian government has an innovative solution to the problem: sue the cigarette companies for the health care costs associated with treating their customers.

      All the time.

You're right, but there certainly is a problem in firing someone based on insurance. You're right, it should be handled differently, but job opportunity should not be a risk.
I'd like to see the response to sending a thousand smokers over to Iraq, to live a lavish lifestyle on the military's tab, as they fight terrorists with second-hand smoke.

Dear Katie, I am sorry to hear that your doctor made a mistake and put you on Depo injections. You say that you are still getting injections? These injections are made from progestin, a synthetic form of progesterone which is used mainly as a method of birth control for women who cannot use any other form of birth control. One of the drug's side effects is weight gain. A single injection lasts for three months. So if you are still getting these injections, please, please, tell your doctor that you don't want to receive them any longer. The effects of the drug will remain in your body for three months, so during these three months, it may be difficult to lose the added weight which you gained, no matter what you do. There are other more gentler ways to regulate your periods and menses, especially at your tender formative age. Here are some of the negative reasons for not using Depo-Provera: it can cause decreased bone density which can lead to osteoporosis, depression, increased blood clots, liver damage, headaches, hair loss, leg cramps, nervousness, dizziness, abdominal bloating, and weight gain. For your stretch marks on your stomach, you can rub some vitamin E on them. Just puncture a capsule of vitamin E and gently apply to your stomach area once or twice each day. The stretch marks will respond to the vitamin E if you use it regularly and use it as soon as they appear. The older the stretch marks, the longer and more difficult they are to rub away. It is best to use natural vitamin E, which can be distinguished from the synthetic form by the following small print and notations on the vitamin bottle: d- is the natural form, and dl- is the synthetic form. Use only the d- form which is the natural form. I think that synthetic substances have caused enough harm already, and should be laid to rest. Find a doctor who will listen to you, have patience until the Depo drug gets out of your system and body, and continue follow a healthy diet and exercise regimen to get back to your former weight. Please read the posts above to learn more about dieting. Good luck. blog link
