computers the terrible twos.

If you were logged in, you could vote for this story!

my computer and i are at war.

my computer, whose name is gordon (because that's a fucking retarded name and my computer is fucking retarded) was purchased in the springtime of 2002. i had him built with my paltry savings, and money my ex-roommate paid me back, for all those grueling months of me, working at movie gallery on minimum wage, supporting my ass and a third of his, waiting for him to get his SSI.

i remember being really excited about gordon, whose name was once MACHINE. i was excited because i would finally have a computer of my own. i could do anything with the glorious power of the intarweb which i would clutch in my clammy fingers forevermore.

so i had this dude built. i probably should have waited until i had more money to build myself something truly awesome. i was so desperate to have any kind of access that my fatal flaw involved not getting TEH BEST O TEH BEST gearstuffs for my little friend because i needed it immediately.

and so... it was done.

for a while, it was great.

after maybe two months of use, it started rattling kinda loud, and the fan started getting louder... and louder... until my mom forced me to move it out of the living room because it was "distracting."

i was happy still, i didn't care.

a few months later, right before MACHINE's first birthday, the power supply blew.

i got it replaced, no big deal.

and then again.

and then i replaced it again.

and then there were viruses.

and i got rid of the viruses.

and then i changed it's name to gordon, like a challenged drooler who only barely ever does what you want it to do. and then i started daydreaming about having bazillions of dollars to build me a megacomputer and throwing gordon off the roof of a parking garage.

and then the monitor stopped working sporadically.

and then one day when i was on my bed reading a book, for no known reason, the monitor fell off my desk and smashed my optical mouse. i got a very old school mouse.

and there were viruses that prevented me from getting on the internet. and i got rid of them. slowly. painfully. i rid them.

gordon is akin to the weird old guy who has scabies and never washes, whose iQ is about 12, and always has unknown sticky substances peeling off his face and fingers. he has a crossed eye and one leg that's shorter than the other. he always wears stained polo shirts, sweatpants that are too short, and orthopaedic shoes.

let's not forget how badly he wants to die. for no reason at all, anything i plug into this computer eventually goes to crap. i got that old school mouse and it worked for a while, until it started spasming uncontrollably.

it is not even three years old and it's deteriorating this quickly.

so this brings me to my most recent problem with the fuckrag. two nights ago, i was on the comp, running maybe three programs. suddenly i hear a pop! and my computer freezes. i can't get it to shut down after an hour and finally give up and flip the switch. i turn it back on and it gets to startup but IT WILL NOT REGISTER THE MOUSE OR THE KEYBOARD AT ALL.

I HAVE A BUNCH OF PAPERS TO WRITE AND SHIT TO DO.
FUCK YOU GORDON, THIS IS IT.

papers: whenever i can, at the computer lab. not mentioning starting them all over, because they were on the computer's harddrive and not in my email.

With havin so much content and articles do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or copyright infringement? My site has a lot of exclusive content I've either authored myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my authorization. Do you know any ways to help protect against content from being stolen? I'd certainly appreciate it. blog writing sites

My guess is that you just don't know how to take care of a computer. My computer was bought a little over a year ago, and even though I used cheap shit, it still works fine. I'm waiting for a new case and power supply because finally, after a year and a half of constant uptime, this $15 power supply is taking its last shit. And I just like the new case.

When running windows, you need to get your defenses up at all times. I just fixed this ignorant motherfucker's computer yesterday. He had it for a little over a year, running on cable internet, with no firewall or antivirus or spyware tools. A 2.4 GHz computer that acted like it was maybe 300 Mhz, tops.

The moral of the story is, if you buy windows, you need to learn to maintain windows. Or stop bitching about it. Or, you can buy a Mac. That's my plan.

So if you buy a shitty car you better be prepared to waste all your time and money learning to maintain it?

Because that's what you are saying.

Oh, but wait... there are more options in what type or car you can buy.

Most people are trapped under a monopoly that this country allowed to develop and has allowed to continue its practices. You shouldn't have to spend hours of time just to turn your car on! This is not error on the side of the user. Its a problem with the product.

And the answer isn't running off to a new shitty operating system. Because they all have their share of problems. Spending the time and money to learn a new operating system because you are pissed at another brand is not the answer.

The answer is bitching about the current system and getting them to correct the problems in their product. If they are unwilling to cooperate, that is when you seek out alternatives.

I'm a little tired of this OS elitism. Not everyone wants to know the intimate details of their computer. But that doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to use a computer. That's ignorant.

So if you buy a shitty car you better be prepared to waste all your time and money learning to maintain it?

No, but if you buy a shitty car and never look under the hood (or pay someone else to do it) then you shouldn't be surprised when it won't work anymore. In a similar way, if you buy a computer made with the cheapest possible components, using a notoriously insecure OS, and don't put in the slightest amount of effort (both learning about problems and fixing them), why should you be surprised when it makes your life hell and finally shits the bed?

Most people are trapped under a monopoly that this country allowed to develop and has allowed to continue its practices.

Oh bullshit. I've been using computers for 30 years, and remember when people were buying their first computers. Aside from the early '80s when people really decided between Commodore/Amiga/Adam/Apple hardware, most people just went to Best Buy and bought whatever was cheapest, had the coolest looking case (or biggest "TURBO" button), or was pushed hardest by the salesdweeb.

Home computer users aren't trapped. They have free will. They're just ignorant, lazy, and cheap.

And the answer isn't running off to a new shitty operating system. Because they all have their share of problems. Spending the time and money to learn a new operating system because you are pissed at another brand is not the answer.

That's just silly. All OSes do not have the same number of problems or types of problems. Yes, you might have to learn some more stuff, but it gets easier each time, especially with graphical systems. Hey, you already know how to use a mouse, word processor, and browser, right? How different are they really going to be?

The answer is bitching about the current system and getting them to correct the problems in their product. If they are unwilling to cooperate, that is when you seek out alternatives.

Yeah, you go write that letter to Microsoft. I'm sure all those security problems will be fixed Real Soon Now.

I'm a little tired of this OS elitism. Not everyone wants to know the intimate details of their computer. But that doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to use a computer.

What's wrong with elitism? If something is demonstrably better than something else, just what is wrong with acknowledging it? Not everything is of equal value in this world. It's better to be not hungry than hungry. Guess what? Some stuff is better than some other stuff. Some real estate is better than other real estate. Some schools are better than other schools. Some computers use the cheapest possible components and others don't. And some operating systems have known security flaws that take knowledge and skill to make secure and others are secure out of the box.

If you want to own a computer, you have a choice: (a) learn enough about it to keep it working and secure, (b) pay someone else do do the work for you (possibly indirectly by using a better OS), or (c) suffer the consequences.

Now maybe it's evil and elitist to pick option a or b, because either demonstrates intelligence or conspicuous consumption, but at least that person has a working computer. And, to make an elitist comparison -- it's better to have a working computer than to have a broken computer.

Call me Mister Elite, but I paid a little bit more for my computer up front, and have spent a bit of time learning how to keep it running well. This particular computer has given me five years of trouble-free service, which obviously makes it better than the original poster's computer (and probably results in a lower total cost of ownership). The only thing that's stopping anyone from being in my position is being too cheap or too ignorant. If you want to defend that position, feel free.

And yes, that monopoly is trapping home users into using inferior and dangerous products. The lawsuits WORLDWIDE sort of support this theory. Yes, perhaps some are ignorant and lazy but that sir is ignorant and lazy of you to assume most home users fit this catergory. If you need further information on this recent event occuring now, I can direct you to reading material.

Well yes, all OSes do have their own problems and that is something each one has to overcome. But you have to admit that not all of them are "user friendly". Yes, over the years they have all tried to increase their "friendliness" factor. But I'm sure you aren't going to march up to your boss and proclaim that because you are able to use this OS everyone should. That's just silly. Not everyone can, will or wants to drive stick.

Elitism breeds a totally new brand of ignorance that you promptly displayed here. "Better" is a rather vague discription. My idea of better can be completely different from yours. And statistics can prove whatever it is either one of us wants to show. And in computers it really depends what you are trying do. Once again, a personal preference. It can't all be lump sum and according to what you dictate.

"Call me Mister Elite, but I paid a little bit more for my computer up front, and have spent a bit of time learning how to keep it running well. It's cute how you combine too cheap and too ignorant into a negative statement. Because both can be completely seperate in the realm of buying a computer. Sure you had the money and the attitude to spend more for your computer. But not everyone does. Needing a working computer at that moment with whatever money you have laying about does not mean you are ignorant, just desperate. And in this situation the author was obviously desperate and is once again in another desperate situation.

Perhaps one day everyone will be able to afford the things they like. But the REALITY of the situation is that no situation is ideal. Money is tight, time is money and you have a paper due tomorrow. The reality of the situation is that you are going to do what you need to do in order to get the high priority accomplished. And if learning a new OS and building your own machine isn't your priority well then, you are going to take what is given.

There may be a monopoly, but its one that the people have let grow. Not everyone owns a mac, but everyone knows about them. And most that don't use them ignorantly assume they can't, its inferior or incompatible.

Not speaking as a fanboy, because these are largely just people who haven't tried it more than 10 minutes, if that. Think about how long it took to get the hang of (the basic) windows? And these people give X 12 seconds of thought.

Very true sir. I hadn't started to get into the whole Mac side of things since we were talking more mainstream computer usage.

But it's a good thing to understand and know it's out there.

Will Macs ever be a monopoly? Hard to say. Probably not considering their users and uses. But who knows. Maybe we'll all become artists. hehe.

And that there is a monopoly out there that our government has so nicely decided to pretend doesn't exist. You can write Ashcroft about this if you need information.

You seem to be missing the point (as well as the fact that Ashcroft's been replaced by a Mexican). Three years ago, Raven had a choice: x86 with Windows, x86 with Linux, or a used Mac. With the last two options she wouldn't have had to deal with Windows at all, and if she'd gone with a used Mac she wouldn't have even had to deal with cheap components.

Microsoft has a de facto monopoly, not an actual one. Yes, if you go into businesses you'll primarily see boxes running Windows. However, home users have always had a choice. Nobody's forcing them to use Windows. I've never run Windows at home. In fact, unthinking users who automatically buy Windows computers (and, similarly, exchange files in Microsoft's proprietary Office formats) are what perpetuates Microsoft's stranglehold.

So yeah, I stand by ignorant, lazy, and cheap. They seem to explain pretty well why people avoid the Linux or Mac route.

I'm not saying Raven has to build her own computer, install the latest Linux distro, learn how to patch the kernel, get familiar with reading man pages, or any other of that booga-booga scary shit.

            Two words: Used Macintosh

Y'know, Macintosh, that "elite" computer that's famously easy to use? I wrote both my M.A. and Ph.D. theses on Macs which can be purchased for under $150. No, they won't run the latest games, but they're entirely adequate for writing papers, programming, and basic web browsing.

"Yeah, you go write that letter to Microsoft. I'm sure all those security problems will be fixed Real Soon Now."

From this statement it's obvious you haven't deeply cared about anything and thus will not understand what it is to fight for beliefs. And I will drop it at that.

As well you should, because that's a specious argument. I don't "fight" Microsoft because they're a convicted monopolist or have dubious government contracts. I fight them because most of their software fucking sucks (although I still like Word 5.1a for the Mac very much).

In fact, their software has consistently gobbled such dong that aside from my early days with an IBM 5100, I've been giving my money to Apple Computer. I fight for my beliefs through my wallet.

If your idea of fighting is to continue to buy Windows machines, I can't say that you seem to truly care much either. Which do you think would affect Microsoft's behavior more: buying their stuff and complaining or taking your business elsewhere?

Elitism breeds a totally new brand of ignorance that you promptly displayed here. "Better" is a rather vague discription. My idea of better can be completely different from yours. And statistics can prove whatever it is either one of us wants to show. And in computers it really depends what you are trying do. Once again, a personal preference. It can't all be lump sum and according to what you dictate.

Spare me the low-rent epistemological discussion. In this context, "better" is a computer that lets Raven write papers as opposed to a piece of shit that doesn't.

There's a difference between "being desperate yet making an informed, calculated decision" and "being desperate and spazing out like a chicken on fire."

Let's use a car analogy: Your car dies and you need a new one right away. You don't have much money. Do you buy the first one that you see at a used car lot, or do you go to the library for an hour or two, have a peek at the Consumer Reports used car reports, and jot down their tips on what to look for when checking out a used car?

Just because one is poor does not mean that one has to be lazy, ignorant, and consequently, screwed.

We don't know the specific dollar amounts, but I'm willing to bet that for the cost of having the white box computer made, Raven could have bought a used Mac. Same cost, better components, no virus problems, no GFD.

Being elite is assuming everyone has the same options you do.

I won't deny it, I belong to an elite group -- people who own computers that are easy to use and work well with little maintenance. I'm part of an elite group that doesn't need to pay attention to the latest virus patches and doesn't care about Windows exploits. I believe that it's currently limited to 2-5% of the computing population. My membership in this elite society must really get your hackles up. Don't you wish you had $150 to join us?

When Raven bought the white box, she had the same choices I did. She chose poorly. That doesn't mean that it always has to be that way.

If you're unwilling to invest even a little time learning how to best select and use a tool that improves your life, you really shouldn't be surprised when your life isn't improved by that tool.

All I can say to this without picking apart every detail is "typical Mac user".

No, not all Mac users are elitist or think that Macs solve all problems.

Macs have plenty of problems, my favorite is their users not understanding compatibility issues. And that they sure love buying all the fancy hardware that is provided for them.

              Thanks but...

I'll stick to building my own.

              And running my own.

And not having to deal with compatibility issues.

All I can say to this without picking apart every detail is "typical Mac user".

Yep. Someone who's happy with his computer and constantly astonished by people who put up with so many problems with theirs.

Oh, by the way, I know a concession when I see one.

Macs have plenty of problems, my favorite is their users not understanding compatibility issues.

Since Raven's computer doesn't work at all, that's a more serious compatibility issue.

And that they sure love buying all the fancy hardware that is provided for them.

Yawn. Let it go. Dropping all of your arguments and then turning around to "slam" Macs just makes you look petty. Especially when it sounds as pathetically sour grapes as "all that fancy hardware."

                Thanks but...

I'll stick to building my own.

                And running my own.

And not having to deal with compatibility issues.

Hey, if you're willing to put in the effort to learn and do, more power to you. Perhaps you can help Raven fix her computer.

Maybe someday you can join the super duper elite users that don't adhere to brands or labels.

And maybe someday you can write a reply that doesn't undermine your previous one.

You know, being a windows user DOES suck really hard... I am _quite_ glad I put time and effort into maintaining my computers as if I didn't I expect I would in the same situation as raven...

Clambo (and whoever made the original comment) is right... even if Macs are weak.

Working at a computer store I see TONS of people coming in who think their computer should just work ("What? The hard drive is dead? What are you talking about, how does that happen?"). They don't take into account that you DO need to learn a bunch of shit to use a car. Like filling it with gas, and changing the oil, where the brakes are, etc... A computer is the same thing.

A Mac is like a taxi.

              That's a big post.

Microsoft has a de facto monopoly...not an actual one?

Am I losing my mind, or doesn't de facto refer to something that actually exists, even though it doesn't exist on paper? Anyway, I disagree. Some people just love Macs, and are willing to shell out a few extra bucks to get one and not have to deal with the Windows BS.

But Windows works beautifully if you look after it. Keep the viruses and spyware off your back and you shouldn't have any problems. The exception to this is that there really are some incredibly shitty computers out there. Compaq, in particular, has amazed me with how quickly they deterioriate. My boss tried to bring a model that he picked up at Best Buy or something in to the office, and I had an unbelievable time trying to use it. I literally stripped the thing down to nothing about 3 times in a year, reinstalling Windows 2000 and only the necessary software each time, and the thing wasn't even connected to the Internet. Three to four months later I was doing it again. They took it home and now their daughter writes emails on it. It was just a piece of shit, as anything you buy at Circuit City or Best Buy will always be. So I have seen a piece of shit computer inexplicably fall apart. But most likely this user just didn't cover his ass and got attacked left and right by viruses. And certainly Microsoft will "update" Windows 2000 right out of existence, to be replaced by some new piece of shit that collapses in the style of Windows 95 or Windows Me. (Remember that piece of shit? They only tried to market it for about 6 months, and then even they had to admit it was a stinking turd that should be flushed.)

As far as Microsoft and monopolies go, they bought up FoxPro, a database product that is roughly analogous to Access, and maintain the product only to avoid the anti-trust issues. They don't develop it, they don't market it. It used to kick their ass up and down the block, so they bought it and sandbagged it. Fuck those motherfuckers. I hate Microsoft.

Oh, aheh -- sorry about that. I fell right asleep there for a moment. Right. Bottom line: all computers are complex devices. Learn to maintain them or pay someone else to do so. That there's a hard lesson I learned.

Now, can we get on with the bitching?

Yeah, I'm ignorant. Ignorant enough to build and maintain my own Windows-based computer, my parents, my friends, my family, and some people that I don't even fucking know. Yes, I'm ignorant. With the automation that's built into my free anti-virus, free anti-spyware tools, and free web browser, I have to work too hard to keep my computer safe from all the crap that's on the net. I might as well just go online unprotected and forget keeping my computer safe.

As to the ever-fucking-present car=computer analogy, fuck off and die. YES if you buy a shitty car be prepared to spend a lot of money to keep it running. YOU CAN'T BUY A FORD FIESTA AND EXPECT A FUCKING MAYBACH. Say it with me now, "you get what you pay for."

If you want to compare a homebrew computer with a car, go build yourself a fucking car.

Every OS sucks. I say this from a dual-boot Windows XP/Mandrake 10 box, that's sitting next to a really nifty old Mac system running Mac OS 9.2, with a Mac mini on the way. My primary OS has been Windows - with zero spyware or viruses - for about 5 years now.

To sum up, don't call me ignorant if you don't know me, motherfucker.

I can still try. Some of you have been cocksuckers from the beginning who flame people in ways that clearly suggest you think you are masters of composition and irony and humor and any other literary device you'd care to name. This is so surprisingly open-handed with you to offer without restraint all that a few people would have marketed as an e-book to earn some cash for themselves, especially considering the fact that you might well have done it in case you considered necessary. The smart ideas likewise served like the easy way to realize that other individuals have the identical desire the same as my own to realize a great deal more on the subject of this problem.
