general Living in America? LEARN ENGLISH !!!!!!!

I'm not saying you have to speak English 24/7 ..but at least get a slight grasp of the language of the country you choose to live in !!

I am not anti-forgein-launguage-speakers...I think it's wonderful that people speak other languages--I wish I was bi-lingual. Notice I said BI-lingual...meaning that I would be able to speak two languages...I would love to speak Italian, Spanish, or German, and since Florida is inundated with Haitains, I think speaking some Creole would benefit me greatly.
However, my problem lies with those who CHOOSE to live in America, yet refuse to learn the bare bone basics of the English language. If I decided to up and move to Italy or Germany, or Haiti, I would certainly attempt to learn their native language, in order to get by.
I have an even BIGGER problem with Miami. Not so long ago, there was an attempt to make Spanish the "Official Language" of Miami-Dade county-YOU MUST BE KIDDING!!! Miami is still part of Florida, and Florida is still part of the USA...and if I'm not mistaken, ENGLISH is the "official language" of the USA.
If all these people decided to move to America, to make their dreams come true, FINE...have at it...but LEARN THE LANGUAGE !!!! Why should I, a woman who has lived in Florida nearly her entire life, need a Spanish speaking translator to drive down to Miami? They were trying to get all street signs in Spanish, all Government tests, like driver's licenses, to be mandatory in Spanish, available in English upon request...give me a fucking break!!! If I moved to Germany, I certainly wouldn't expect them to change everything to English just to accomodate ME...If I made the choice to live there, I would make the choice to learn the language of the country I CHOSE to call "Home" !!! We didn't ask millions of Spanish and Haitian immigrants to live in Florida...they made that choice on their own...if America is so great, and they were so desperate to live here, LEARN THE FUCKING LANGUAGE !!!!!!!!!!

I am not ignorant to the fact that Native Americans were forced to learn English, and technically, we should all be speaking Cherokee or Seminole or any number of other Native American tribe dialects...unfortunately, that was hundreds of years ago, and there's nothing we can do about that now. But if the Native American languages made a sudden comeback, you bet your sweet ass I would learn it to the best of my ability!!

These immigrants are making a choice to move to America. They are making a choice to live in a country where English is spoken. I don't care what language they speak at home, but for Christ's sake, learn English so you can get by at work, at the grocery store, or whatever!

And here's a bit of a work related rant...I am an RN, and I'm the Charge Nurse...which means I'm the boss of my shift...lovely, right? Well, the vast majority of our CNA's are Haitians with a tender grasp of English at best...to the point where our patients can hardly communicate with them, nurses can hardly communicate with them....I give them an instruction, and they look at me with these vacant expressions, and you know they have no clue what you just said...my question is this...How in the HELL did they pass their state exams in Florida????? The state boards are NOT offered in Creole....so how in the world did they read and answer English questions ?? Because if I write something in English and give it to them, they look at me like I've just written everything in Greek !!

THIS IS AMERICA !!! LEARN AND SPEAK THE LANGUAGE !!!!!!

You are mistaken. The United States does not have an official language at the federal level.

And while we're cleaning up the linguistic landscape: all you native speakers should learn to write worth a good God damn. The ellipsis, for example, has a specific grammatical meaning.

Looking at the trends, English appears to be on its way to becoming a second-tier language in the United States. Might be time to learn some Spanish yourself, chica.

In case someone might read your post and not realize what an ellipsis is...it is a mark that indicates an omission of words or a pause...I use it as a pause...so I guess that since I'm using the ' ... ' in the defined scope of proper usage, as an intended pause, I guess you weren't attempting a snide, slightly veiled insult aimed toward me.
And fuck the trends. The only reason English is becoming "second-tier" is because the immigrants are too fucking LAZY to learn the language of the country they CHOSE to call home. I'll learn Spanish when and IF I move to Spain. Until then, I'll just stick with the language of the country I live in. Too bad the immigrants don't have the sense to do the same.

...but I think that there's a deeper problem that she's trying to get at. We have these pockets of ethnicity living here. Foreigners clump together becuase it makes them feel at ease to be with people just like them...and this is America, land of opportunity. You can say anything. Do anything. Be anything.

          So they become CNA's.

But there's a problem inherent in that. The majority of people that they'll be treating are monolingual english speakers. It scares me just a little that the person I may be counting on to keep my ass alive may instead kill me because they don't speak the predominant language of the country in which they live. It's not right to dissallow this person from getting a CNA as long as they can pass the tests but in real life, not a nice sterile and predictable class room, they can't even communicate with the RN in charge. It's very nice of us to hand them their CNA, but the fact of the matter is that such severe gaps in the ability to effectively communicate can result in death or disability in an industry that's already experiencing distress due to malpractice lawsuits galore. The hospital can't deny them employment based on their ethnicity -- that's racism -- and they passed their exams so they're fit to fill the position. Only they're not fit to fill the position because they stare at people like they've gone catatonic whenever they're not spoken to in their native language.

I've experienced this myself. I've gotten it from people that I know have lived here years and years. In some cases, the offending parties have lived here close to a decade and have managed to insulate themselves so well from the rest of the english speaking united states that they can't speak english any better now than when they first got off the boat.

I find that kind of arrogance as offensive as if someone tossed around the word "nigger" in my presence.

And I'm just talking about the legal immigrants...

If they want to come to America, FINE...but learn the fucking language!!!! That does not make me xenophobic, that makes me a person who feels that people in America should have a basic grasp of the English language, which is, for now, the recognized language of this country. If I was a xenophobic person, I would be demanding the deportation of all foreigners and immigrants. If I were a xenophobic person, I would not eat Mexican, Chinese, Italian, or Cuban foods. As it stands, I am NOT xenophobic. I simply feel that if a person chooses to make America their home, they should get a grasp of the English language.

        You use it thrice!

The MLA Style Guide reserves ellipses for the sole purpose of indicating removed words in a quote from a source other than yourself. For example: "We the people . . . do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America." Ellipses are typified by three dots separated by spaces at the beginning and end, as well as in between.

If course, the MLA is primarily applied to research papers. For colloquial constructions, it may be better to go to a more generic source. I can't think of a more authoritative source for the state of the language in general than the Oxford English Dictionary.

You might consider employing a single period when you have reached the end of idea; the semicolon will serve to conjoin related but distinct ideas together in a syntactic unit.

If you're too lazy to the learn the language of the country, go back to wherever it is you people come from.

I only have that lousy bastard Mirriam Webster to use as a reference...and Good old Webster says that the ellipse is used for A) omission of words, or B) TO INDICATE A PAUSE

I use my ............... to indicate a pause where I wanted to pause. If I wanted to put a period, I would have. However, I wanted to indicate a pause, so I did.

I am thrilled, however, that you had nothing better to criticize me about than my use of ellipses, which were intentionally used to indicate the pauses that I was intentionally indicating.

Fuck you all. Fuck you all right in the ear. What kind of arrogance does it take to move to another country and expect that things will change to accomidate you? No. That's not how it works, you lazy bums. Or at least, that's not how it should work. I mean, holy hickory smoked christs...buy an audio book. Take a class. Get a program for your PC. I think part of the problem here is that there's this mythical "foreigner" person who shows up and starts making demands that the world starts spinning backwards for him. And if it were just one person, that would certainly be an unreasonable stance.

The hispanic population of Florida is 2.7 million, or approximately 16% [1]. The figure is inaccurate as not all hispanics speak a non-English language exclusively, but it is sufficient to make the point. The need for bilingual acceptance in the culture is driven by a considerable multitude of people. No one (or even few) mythical foreigners appeared on our shores demanding accommodation. Rather, a steady flow of immigrants has resulted in a significant need for the society to acclimate to their presence.

Someone attempted to examplify the situation by proposing that if they travelled to Germany, they wouldn't expect the German government to put all the road signs in English. This is a fallacious account of the situation. If millions of English-only speakers went to Germany over the course of a few decades (for whatever reason), the German government might see the need to meet us halfway in our linguistic needs.

One benefit of such a compromise might be that we could CONTRIBUTE TO THAT SAME SOCIETY rather than being a drag on it because we don't speak the language. The only thing worse than an immigrant taking our vital fries-are-up jobs away from us is an immigrant who sucks away our tax money through welfare programs, right?

Get over it, guys. Is bilingualism such a strain for you to live with for a few minutes a day, or are you just irate at being outted as a bunch of pendejos?

My aforementioned mythical foreigners are not so much actively making demands as quietly doing nothing. Not even learning English. Yet they are American citizens and, as such, afforded all the rights and priveliges(sp?) thereof.

Compromise is usually good. I'm all about compromise but at what point do we decide that a line must be drawn? Effectively mono-lingual spanish speaking police officers? How about effectively mono-lingual hatian EMTs?

Maybe I'm offering a slippery-slope argument. I hate slippery-slope arguments. Either way, it really really bothers me (read "pisses me off to high heaven") that a RN can't even talk to the CNA's who are helping her keep people alive because the CNA's don't have so much as a half-way decent grasp of english. That, specifically, is what I label a "steaming crock of doodie".

I have no problems with the idea of wellfare. I have problems with specific instances of wellfare abuse. I also hear that the system is designed to pull you in and keep you there. I don't know. I have no experience with wellfare (thank god). Frankly, your refrence to wellfare sounds like pure sensationalism -- like you're trying to win an argument by making the source seem suspect. It's a good tactic, I'll admit. But it is underhanded, of the dark side, and I'm calling you on it.

Forgot the <irony> tag around the welfare bit.

It absolutely is a bullshit argument. It's the bullshit argument I hear lots of people make when they start hatin' on teh furriners.

As for the excusively Spanish-speaking cops... hmm... Good point there. I would respond that the government's duty to the citizenry implies a duty to all the subdivisions that make that citizenry up. The idea of statehood within the federal system, as outlined in the articles of the Constitution, is a tacit acknowledgement that American society is comprised of the sum of differentiated parts, not of a homogeneous whole.

Therefore, an agent of the government (such as a cop) should be expected to be able to deal with any subsocietal element of the citizenry. So multilingualism of a stripe consistent with the population of the area--perhaps English/German near Amish country--is a necessary trait in the official institutions of the government.

Along the same line of reasoning, that's why I support the establishment of an official language as a state right, not a federal one. Even then, however, the state must concede that the federal government above it is an amalgamation, not a continuity.

And if you think *that's* wordy, you should hear what I've got to say to The One when he makes it to The Source...

I agree with you TGirl........I too live in South Florida and I do speak enough Spanish to get by,although I admit the fact that I need it at all is really annoying. If I were to move to a foreign country I would certainly take the time to learn a few phrases of the language.
If you haven't experienced what T is talking about, drive on down to Little Havana in Miami. If you don't speak Spanish, expect to be met with blank, uncomprehending stares from anyone you happen to speak to.Forget about going to a restaurant, and if you go to a store, make sure you know what you want and point to it,or you won't get it.Bear in mind you are still in the United States.NOTHING is in English here.
This is in a city in the state of Florida(which, last time I looked, had not seceded from the Union and gone back to Spanish rule)and the predominant language in the United States(which Florida is indeed a part of)is ENGLISH.

    1) Are you past puberty? Have you tried learning a new language lately? (The human mind rapidly loses its capacity to learn new languages after childhood. Many immigrants are adults.)

    2) Are you fluent in a second or third language? Are you embarassed trying to speak it to a native? (Shame and ridicule are deterrents to conversation.)

    3) Have you considered that perhaps you're just a rude fucker that nobody wants to talk to? (The attitudes of assholes such as yourself only serves to make immigrants want to NOT BE LIKE YOU. That includes refusing to speak Assholese, which is the de facto official language.)

    4) Do you know American Sign Language? (Are you willing to accommodate every native born American, regardless of whether they actually can speak a verbal language?)

Finally: Sorry asshat, but perhaps the people who immigrate have greater priorities than just learning the language. I'm thinking perhaps they're more concerned with escaping fascist death squads, or--irony of ironies--ethnic persecution. Welcome to these shores, fucker.

Actually I am well past puberty.I have learned foreign langauges but since I rarely have ocassion to use them,I have lost most of my ability to speak them well.I am not fluent on a second language, but that is my choice, since, again,I have never been required to be bilingual.
I am a rude fucker and I am sure most people don't want to speak to me,which is fine with me,since I don't work with the public in any way,and the only people I am required to talk to are my immediate friends(who love me),my husband(who adores me)and my family(who love me ooodles)
As a matter of fcat I do know some sign language,bu since I do not need it for my profession I have lost most of it through the years. If the need to learn it arose,I would be glad to learn it anew)oh,and by the way,ASL is generally not considered a foreign language.
I understand people coming here to escape persecution.Fine.I am talking about people who were born and raised in the United States and yet do not know how to speak English.

Excuses, excuses, EXCUSES...If I made a choice to live in a country that English was not the primary language, I would learn whatever language I needed to learn in order to communicate effectively.
What excuse do you give someone who has lived in America for greater than 20 years, and still has no grasp of the English language? Let me guess...they were still have greater priorities, like worrying about the fascist death squads, right?
Like I said, you are making pathetic excuses for laziness. It might be more difficult to learn a language as an adult, but it is not impossible. To make no attempt at learning the language of the country in which you live is nothing short of laziness. If someone believes that speaking the English language would make them "Like me", well, there are several other million English speaking Americans that they can converse with, in a variety of situations. Perhaps they need directions. Perhaps they need to find a hospital. Perhaps they want to find a product in a grocery store. Perhaps they are having a heart attack and need to call 911. Perhaps they need to tell someone that they are allergic to a medication. Perhaps they need to LEARN ENGLISH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1) It's kinda been proven false that the human mind loses it's ability, it's more of a motivation thing-- Most adults spend their day trying to put food on the table, and once they can do that, if they can get through their day, there is no reason for them to learn. That was the "we hate farmers/technology/southern california" class freshman year of college, I have the references in a box around here somewhere(I'm a farmer's grandson from southern california that was in school for comp sci).

      2) I am conversant, not necessarily fluent in a second language, but I know exactly what you mean, if at all possible, I stick with english.

      3) I know I am a rude fucker, but most others don't know that, so it's all good.

      4) yes, but I speak it with a strange accent.

Finally: No, mostly they're worried about food. they have officially left the fascist death squads when they get to our country.

Or didn't have the ability to communicate in English? Trust me, I'm far from feebleminded.

Simplemente porque dije que deseo que fuera más con soltura en español, no significa que soy totalmente incapaz de hablar el idioma.

It's alright, I have no reason to engage anyone in Spanish unless I think I'm being clever. Otherwise it's not only not a worthwhile language or part of a culture, it's in the way.

So, the argument I'm reading is that these poor, weak, huddled masses yearning to breathe free are exempt from the burden of bilinguality, while those native to this great nation of ours should accommodate them by learning their native toungue, so we can make their lives better?

(And notice I wrote "native to this great nation of ours" and not "native to this great land of ours," so blow your Native American arguments out your red-skinned ass.)

What, the $1.25 per hour we give them for cleaning our toilets and working in our fields isn't enough for them? Now we have to change our street signs, too?

    Give me a fucking break.

And why is it that the SAP button on my remote control lets me hear "Everybody Loves Raymond" in Spanish, but it doesn't turn "Oscar de la Hoya Presenta Boxeo De Oro" into English? Answer me that.

I do get turned on when a hot Cuban girl calls me Papi, though, so maybe we're even.

    Tgirl,

I was with you up to the spot where you said that everyone here should be speaking Cherokee. I read it twice to make absolutely sure that YOU'RE A MORAN!!!

After that, I just skipped down to the comments and started with the dunce-caps on your comments. Man, I have never given out so many dunce-caps in one day. I need a macro or something.

I think you're right, though. Legislators in texas, california and florda are bending over backwards to get the hispanic vote, and some of the crap they put on the table is just fucking ridiculous. These new immigrants should get their rear in gear and start assimilating into the culture already, just like the rest of our ancestors did when the came over.

If you can't speak English and live in America, you need to learn the lanuage before anything or get the fuck out. If you wanna speak spanish settle for mexico.

Those cultured "humans" as the leftist Commies would put it are only serving to make this country weaker.
It isn't fair that my child should have to suffer merely because they are lazy.

Learn that lanuage until you have mastered the lanuage and can speak and write proficiently in that same lanuage! It is vital!

You guys give me a migraine. I can't tell you how much effort it took to write that sentence the way it needed to be written. I mean, I'm a pretty wonky typist to begin with, but this was beyond the pale.

So this thread made me actually join GFD. TGirl, if these CNA's cant do their jobs, isn't that grounds for them to be fired? By not completing the tasks you're delegating to them, the CNA's are putting patient care and safety and YOUR LISCENSE in danger! I just don't understand. It's not about speaking this language versus that one or hating people from other countries. It's not that TGirl wants these people to speak English, it's that she NEEDS them to! It's about these CNA's not doing what they're supposed to and putting TGirl at risk of losing the liscense she worked damn hard for. If not being able to speak English prevents them from doing their job, they're obviously unqualified and shouldn't be there in the first place! These CNA's are working under her RN liscense. The role of a CNA is to accept tasks from an RN to assist with patient care. If these fucktards can't do that, then fire them. They obviously understood enough English to pass a CNA class and a state liscensing exam and get themselves through an interview...maybe they're pretending they don't understand your orders so they can be lazy and not do the shit you need them to do? Why should you have to hold their hands just so the patients get the care they deserve??? CNA's and RN's work as a team and if the team isn't speaking the same language well then the shit that needs to be done for the patients isn't going to get done and she's got a right to be pissed cause her ass is on the line. Ok that's all.
